CTLT Hosts Workshop on Threshold Concepts for SAS Faculty

On 24 September, Mariia Guzikova, Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT), facilitated an interactive workshop on “threshold concepts” for faculty members at the Naryn Campus.

During the session, participants explored and identified threshold concepts within their courses and exchanged ideas on effective teaching strategies to help students engage with these challenging but transformative concepts.

Threshold concepts are core disciplinary ideas that act as “portals” to new ways of thinking. They are often integrative (revealing connections across topics), irreversible (once understood, they cannot be “unlearned”), and troublesome (difficult to grasp). Recognizing and teaching through these concepts is essential for enabling deep learning and student progress within a field.
