We are pleased to announce the call for applications for the first IPROMO Central Asia Summer School, a regional edition of the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Mountain Development (IPROMO).
The course is hosted by the University of Central Asia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe within the framework of the Mountain Partnership.
Under the theme “Glaciers: understanding, preserving, and adapting to climate change,” the course will explore glacier retreat and its implications for regional security and sustainable mountain development in Central Asia, with a focus on adaptation, monitoring and transboundary cooperation.
Dates: 23 June to 7 July 2026
The course will take place in person from 23 June to 7 July 2026 at the University of Central Asia campus in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan. The language of instruction will be English. The programme includes lectures, practical sessions, structured group work and two field trips. The provisional programme is attached for reference.
Eligibility Criteria
Approximately 28 professionals will be selected. This call is for applicants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. This course is geared towards mid-level technical officers, practitioners in institutions, as well as government officials. Therefore, applicants from academia will not be given priority. The course aims to be gender balanced in its selection.
Given the nature of the activities and the mountain environment in which they take place, participants need to demonstrate a high level of adaptability.
Applicants should have an excellent knowledge of English. A university degree preferably in a technical area such as environmental sciences, climate change, hydrology, geology or geography; and relevant work experience are prerequisites.
Funding and Logistics:
Accommodation, meals and field trips are covered. Accommodation will be in shared rooms. Fellowships for international travel will be available and may be assigned by the organizing committee.
