The exhibition “Mountains of Sorrow” demonstrates what land means for nomads, what it means to leave your home behind to walk thousands of kilometers stepping on damp, cold and icy land earth across huge glaciers. And then, what does it mean to return to one’s native land and to start again? This exhibition is about death, life, path, and home earth.

“Though it was a conspired amnesia, yet memories of Urkun continued to live in the oral history of every affected family. Even after decades, the stories shared by their descendants remain full of tragedy and empathy for the victims.”

- Altyn Kapalova
