Dr Mirzobobo Yormirzoev is an Associate Professor of Economics and Academic Director of the Global Economics Program at the University of Central Asia in Khorog, Tajikistan. He earned his doctorate degree from Washington State University, where his research focused on international migration in the former Soviet Union. He also holds a master’s degree from the International University of Japan and a diploma with honors from the Tajik State University of Law, Business, and Politics.
His research interests lie in the areas of economic growth and development, applied and agricultural economics, international migration, and transition economies. His research has been published in leading international journals, including the Russian Journal of Economics, Post-Communist Economies, Comparative Economic Studies, Food Policy, and the International Journal of Consumer Studies. His recent work examines the drivers of growth and productivity performance in Central Asia, with particular attention to human capital, health, and structural transformation.
In the past, Dr Yormirzoev served as a National Macroeconomic Consultant for the Asian Development Bank, where he contributed to the Tajikistan Country Diagnostic Study. His work focused on analyzing the country’s growth dynamics, fiscal policy, state-owned enterprise performance, the role of the informal sector, and the economic implications of major infrastructure projects such as the Rogun Hydropower Plant.
He also worked as an external research consultant for a national project in Kazakhstan, contributing to the development of a new industrial policy concept. As part of a large research team, he helped formulate forecast scenarios to gradually increase the share of medium- and high-tech products in key manufacturing sectors and to identify strategic directions for their accelerated diversification, taking into account ongoing structural reforms in Kazakhstan.
Before joining the University of Central Asia, Dr Yormirzoev was an Associate Professor at the Higher School of Economics in Russia. At HSE, he initiated and led several research projects examining Russian consumers’ perceptions of domestically produced goods following the government’s food import ban. One of his large-scale projects, supported by an HSE Individual Research Grant, resulted in a research paper published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal.
As a prolific researcher, Dr Yormirzoev regularly participates in international conferences, where he delivers impactful presentations.
Over his academic career, he has taught courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics and econometrics, economic growth, and Central Asian economies.
